Wednesday, June 19th - back to hoping

Finally sleeping in the hospital
For those of you that are tired of hearing about Theo's ups and downs: Trust me, I am right there with you.  We are drained, and ready for the light at the end of the tunnel.

Theo's labs on Tuesday didn't get worse, but they didn't get better.  Instead of electing to do a kidney biopsy right away, the nephrologists opted to readmit Theo to the hospital and pump him full of IV fluids for a day to see if his kidney was simply dehydrated.  So, he spent all day yesterday and last night in the hospital getting fluids, and then labs were drawn again this morning.  We were excited to hear that his creatinine came back down to 0.85 this morning.  It's still not a great level, but it's much better than 1.2.

I had told Nick on Monday that I was pretty much at the end of my rope hoping that Dubya, Theo's transplanted kidney, would work.  After today's labs, I'm back to hoping that Dubya will work, and will last Theo a long time. (Side note: I've been told that most people still have no idea why we call Theo's kidney Dubya.  It's a name we picked a couple of days before transplant because we wanted to have something to call it, it was something that Theo could say, and we wanted to name it after cool Aunt Whit, his donor.  Dubya is simply a shortened way to say "W," which stands for Whitney.  There's nothing else to it.)

Theo when he is not so happy.  Still the cutest kid around.
After labs, the doctors weren't sure that they were going to discharge Theo, because there is the potential that he'll be readmitted tomorrow if his results aren't improved.  Nick pushed for discharge, though, and was happy to bring Theo home with a new recipe (where he gets a lot more fluid during the day) and a chance to rest.

We pray that Theo will get a break at some point.  I know how drained and upset I've felt over the last few days, but he's the one dealing with the brunt of it.  He's not been the happiest Theo we've seen, but he's a trooper.

Thanks for all of you who continue to encourage us and pray for Theo.  We've needed it, and are thankful!

  2. I found your blog from someone who shared it on facebook. Praying for your precious little guy. I hope this is just a bump in the road towards a fully functioning Dubya.

  4. I've been reading the blog over the last few weeks and just figured out how to comment. Just want you to know that you (Nick, Theo, doctors and of course Dubya) are being prayed for by so many. I hope that gives you much comfort during your difficult hours. Rest in that....
